Should we talk about The Scriptures?

I ran into some friends the other day at Starbucks, not that this is a hard thing to do I work there after all, and my friends were studying their Bibles! They were actually in the midst of a whole conversation about the Scriptures and about God.  These people were actually in the depths of the scripture giving encouragement to one another and receiving it from the Word of God itself. It was refreshing to see, having had many conversations with people (some of whom were pastors) who refused to get “caught up in pointless talking about trivial things.” Many Christians refuse to make any significant stand on what they believe and just chalk up the harder parts of the Scripture or the “boring parts” of Scripture  as pointless useless theology. I am beginning to believe that in the modern church world if you believe anything beyond what was in the Purpose Driven life, than you are a pharisee or a bible beater. We as Christians should be excited to talk about and study the Bible, as i was reading Knowing Scripture by R.C. Sproul this week I came across this passage in Duet. 6:

5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

We are to be involved in the conversation of the scriptures. I had a philosophy professor who always talked about the great conversation, well this is it, the conversation of the one true God. This is the Great Conversation that we are to be engaged in! And if you think this is just some obscure old testament quote the look at 2 Timothy 3:14-15:

14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Paul is giving a reminder to Timothy that the Scriptures are From God and that and that through them he went through his infancy and into his salvation through Christ. He goes on to say that this Knowledge that comes from God in the scripture is there for the equipping of saints to the the work which they have been called to do. For a more detailed explanation read the book “Knowing Scripture” by R.C. Sproul. The Point,          Far to often we retreat from studying in and talking of the one True God and in turn the scripture which he has given us.  All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. [So] Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

The Cookout

Amy and I are so excited about being in Houston, We really miss all of our friends up in Dallas but we have to be excited about Family and more importantly, about being in God’s will and how he is working things out in ways we couldn’t even see coming (but more on that in a later post).

the grill  But as for tonight we are going to host an American summer time tradition, the “Cookout”. I got an awesome grill for my birthday and i have been itching to use it so we’re very excited about tonight. My family and hers as well as some friends are coming over and it will be a great time.  Now all i need to do is learn how to grill with an open flame, all of my previous experiences with grills  usually had the words George Forman in front of it. -JM

late Nights and Starbucks Coffee

So it is 1:00 am right now.. no one is up even the moon won’t show its face tonight, it is late. I am sitting here at my computer reflecting on the Ways of God. 7 months ago if you had told me I was going to be living in houston with a child about to be born I would have called you nuts, crazy, or something of that sort. But none-the-less I am here in houston about the be a father, which i just realized as i type this that it is fathers-day, God is amazing, full of mystery and wonder. He has laid out a path for Amy and I and our family to follow, we are walking on it. Although sometimes i wish i knew the direction on the path it is not for me to know. The psalmist said “your world is a lamp unto my feet and I light unto my path
” I guess that is true he never said he would like the entire path just whats in front of you so you can follow it. I am content with that.
